Quilting Instructors and Class Descriptions from our 2006 Quilting Seminars
Everyone at our 2006 seminar sessions enjoyed meeting and learning from our nationally recognized quilting instructors. We've decided to archive the class descriptions and instructor interviews from our 2006 quilting retreats so our site visitors can learn more about some of these outstanding quilting instructors. The descriptions below are listed in alphabetical order by instructor last name. Visual depth has fascinated artists for centuries. Karen has developed a quick and easy rotary technique that allows you to make quilts with a 3-D look. Frankly, this is Karen's favorite class because it is so easy to create truly amazing quilts of illusion. In addition, you'll learn the simple secrets to creating the look of transparency in your quilts - the use of color to make it look like one color is laying over another. Want to free yourself up and give your quilts a more contemporary art quilt look? This class gives students the confidence to use a design-as-you-go method of working, to experiment with both design and color. Sandi will demonstrate different approaches to strip piecing, cutting double and playing with small units that are the starting point for many of her quilts. There are endless possibilities. Seminar Week: Feb 26 - March 3, 2006

Is tradition twisted one of your favorites? From this beloved aged imagery, make a new look with your personal expression of basket style and posies (flowers). We will work with folk-art shapes, emphasizing simple, yet effective piecing, appliqué and embellishment. A focus on changes in arrangement, thread types, and familiar stitches used in different ways will be emphasized - all to create your personal "attitude" of work. Having fun, producing a great quilt top, all while increasing confidence in "playing" with your sewing machine will be the agenda. Read our interview with Alice Kolb.

Seminar Week: Feb 26 - March 3, 2006

Learn to draft and piece these exciting radiating stars (mariner's compass type) into circles, ovals or off-center circles. Draft your own formal, symmetrical star into nearly any shape and size or create a flashy off-center star or select a pattern from Judy's book. The designs will be drafted or copied onto freezer paper and then cut directly into foundations to simplify the piecing process. We will deal with color inspiration as well as how to make the points nice and sharp.

Seminar Week: Feb 26 - March 3, 2006

Experiment with freehand drawing and different ways of creating (centered or chaotic; intimate or engaging; implied or literal, etc.) to understand your natural creative style and translate your drawing into a powerful art quilt using fabric, color and texture. Each student will be assisted with problem solving, construction techniques for their composition and its quilting and embellishment. This class is for students who have taken different technique and design classes and are now interested in developing their own unique style, or for the artist exploring fiber as a medium or for the adventuresome beginner who is self motivated and interested in going directly to original design.

Seminar Week: March 5 - 10, 2006

Create a tuneful masterpiece. While Jackie can't carry a tune, she'll guide you through some terrific piecing tricks and techniques that will have you humming as you stitch. Her oft-requested Harvest Song is a multi-block quilt which you can create in traditional flat patchwork, or add some three-dimensional texture to the melody. Seminar Week: March 5 - 10, 2006

A totally fun, relaxed approach to machine quilting: no marking! Class participants will learn the easy way to machine quilt all their quilts on their sewing machine, with designs that fit the space, block, border, etc. Learn how to make flowers, birds, trees, fruits, vegetables, bugs, bows, bonnets, and all the fun designs that make the quilt.  No marking, no stippling, and just fun! Karen Stone will be teaching Options Galore during our second quilt seminar session.

In this very relaxed studio class, we will begin where most wonderful quilts begin - with fabric. Work interpretively to refine color, texture and character choices. Using the masterful palettes that result, students may elect to work from any of Karen's patterns, delve into strange and fabulous technical diversions, follow their own muse, or do any combinations thereof, in a cheerful atmosphere of supportive encouragement.

Seminar Week: March 5 - 10, 2006

Make your projects extraordinary! This multiple topic handwork class will focus first on improving hand quilting skills, trapunto, cording and meander stippling on a small project. Next on to bead embellishments to stitch reference samplers of beading techniques covering basic stitches, attaching objects, and innovative edging and trim methods to apply to quilts, garments and home décor. Conclude by decorating a small fabric necklace pouch using your new skills.

   
   
Gabriell Swain will be teaching Designing from Nature for Applique during our first quilt retreat session.

Seminar Week: Feb 26 - March 3, 2006

Use your favorite photograph or drawing from nature to create an original appliqué quilt. This class will cover principle of color, design and a variety of appliqué techniques. We will use reverse and direct appliqué plus special techniques such as segmented shapes. Two surface design techniques, colored pencil and pen and ink, are included in the class.
