This in-depth class results in a beautiful mix of hand appliqué and hand pieced blocks from Darlene's "A Perfect Union of Patchwork and Appliqué". You will learn to hand piece a variety of stars and circular patchwork. Fabric selection is discussed throughout the lessons. Hand appliqué will move from a simple cutwork block to a pictorial needle appliqué. Hand quilting is also covered, from marking, basting, battings and the stitch itself.

Fabric Collage and Exquisite Embellishment
with Rosemary Eichorn
www.sewjourn.com
Seminar Week: March 4 - 9, 2007

Liberate your muse and develop your quilting design potential using fabric collage techniques to make a small quilt or artwear. You will be encouraged to enjoy a playful and intuitive approach to design, using the theme of your choice. Then you will learn free motion stitching methods to quilt with traditional or novelty threads. Embellishment techniques using twin needles, couching, beading, foiling, and the use of non-traditional sewing materials will be introduced. Emphasis is on developing personal style, design assessment skills and confidence in your creative expression.

Appliqué Quilt Fragments from Amish-Inspired Quilts
with Becky Goldsmith
www.pieceocake.com
Seminar Week: March 11 - 16, 2007

Quilt fragments are a great place to play with design ideas. You will be given four patterns of 18"x 24" quilt fragments which are based on bits of old, loved and well-used quilts. You can use the patterns, alter them, or design your own! Several sewing machines will be on hand for you to use for the construction of your fragment panels. You will also perfect your invisible hand appliqué stitch on a sample block, learning inner points, outer points, cutaway appliqué, reverse appliqué, circles, and more.

Diamond Landscapes
with Jan Krentz
www.jankrentz.com
Seminar Week: March 4 - 9, 2007

This class is a fabric study using 45-degree diamonds. You will use a large number of fabrics (in small quantities) to create your own composition. You will create an impressionist type scene or background using fabric diamonds and work with luscious fabrics to create a gorgeous field of color as you arrange shapes. Study the beautiful landscapes seen in calendars, flower gardens, rolling hillsides, the seashore at sunset and stormy skies. The goal is to find an overall color theme that will inspire your fabric selection. Class will include work with color movement, cutting the diamonds for a stable grain line, and construction techniques.

Curves College©
with Nancy Elliott MacDonald
www.nancymac.com
Seminar Week: March 4 - 9, 2007

You will welcome making quilts with curves using Nancy Elliott MacDonald's practically pinless approach to curved seam machine piecing and her almost painless mark free machine quilting techniques. You will work with three curved-seam patterns: Winding Ways , Rounds and Quilter's Fan. Your areas of study will include rotary cut curves, color use, value effects, The Super Sandwich and a unit on No-Mark Machine Quilting Strategies. During the class, you may construct several small quilt tops or concentrate on a large medallion quilt including all three patterns.

Designing Abstract Quilts
with Katie Pasquini Masopust
www.katiepm.com
Seminar Week: March 4 - 9, 2007

Starting with an original photograph or line drawing, you will create a departure from its reality. You will do six different exercises to explore the abstract and non-representational designs, which include shape, line, blind painting, "cubing", zooming, and abstract still life. Composition, color schemes and a well thought out plan will be emphasized, and a quilt design will be fully realized. Many different techniques will be discussed to help you create your quilt such as appliqué, piecing, fusing, collage, and painting and stamping on the surface.

Layers: Color, Shape, Texture and Collage
with Velda Newman
www.veldanewman.com
Seminar Week: March 11 - 16, 2007

This class throws all the rules of stringent design out the window. First you will construct "units" by exploring machine techniques for texture and shape. Then you will add color and depth with paint and other mediums. Finally, the "units" will be assembled into one fabulous piece. You will find working in the collage style easy and liberating. Subjects that work well for collage are anything that can be layered like fruit, vegetables, shells, baskets, flowers or leaves. Once the techniques are mastered, you can move on to your own ideas for composition, using the collage style.

Touched by Japan
with Sharon Pederson
www.sharonquilts.com
Seminar Week: March 4 - 9, 2007

An exciting mix of machine Sashiko and appliqué will showcase your skills in a significant piece of your own design. You will combine Sashiko and Japanese family crests with the reversible quilt technique which makes the whole process much easier. You will have help in the planning process and anything is possible! Machine quilt one block at a time; then join the blocks the reversible-quilt way for stunning, stress-free results.

Free-Form Machine Quilting
with Kathy Sandbach
www.machinequiltlady.com
Seminar Week: March 11 - 16, 2007

A totally fun, relaxed approach to machine quilting: no marking! You will learn the easy way to machine quilt all your quilts on a standard sewing machine, with designs that fit the space, block, border or whole cloth. The class will also cover choosing quilting designs on your own quilts you have brought for discussion. Learn how to make flowers, birds, trees, fruits, vegetables, bugs, bows, bonnets, feathers and all the fun designs that make the quilt. No marking, no stippling, and just fun!

Designing from Nature
with Jane Sassaman
www.janesassaman.com
Seminar Week: March 11 - 16, 2007

Nature is an endless source of inspiration. In this class you will examine a wide variety of artists' interpretations of nature before beginning to manipulate natural forms yourself. Through a series of exercises you will experiment with abstraction and exaggeration to capture the essence and energy of your favorite flora and achieve dramatic visual effects. You will then translate these ideas into fabric in the workshop. Drawing skills are not needed but you should have a strong interest in developing your own design language and unique visual symbols. This class is especially beneficial for the drawing impaired and the tragically literal!

Strips 'n Curves and Beyond
with Louisa L. Smith
www.quiltescapes.com
Seminar Week: March 11 - 16, 2007

Whether new or experienced in the Strips 'n Curves process, this workshop will have you creating even more wonderful and dynamic quilts. This technique is a combination of strip piecing your fabric into strata which you will do prior to class and curved piecing of shapes into which you cut the strata. The relationship between straight lines and curved lines is the key to creating exciting designs. This process is easy, fun and habit forming! You can take Strips 'n Curves in many directions and all levels will excel.

with Mary Lou Weidman
www.marylouquiltdesigns.com
